Sports & Smokes is the seventh Quetalby tape. Continuing the trend started on Just Got Outta Jail, Quetalby rocks out as a duo without sacrificing sonic textures. The whole tape is Andy’s screeching vocals and Charlie’s thunderous bass. They kick it off with “Hillbilly Land,” which is lyrically reminiscent of “The River,” but musically more akin to “Daddy Won’t Walk.” “Johnny Smokes” is a character study of your typical NAMBLA member. As the tape progresses, the music gets more heavy and freeform. The music veers off in unexpected directions as the lyrics describe the absurd viewpoints of the characters.
